"I think that it's really important to help educate employees in terms of their financial resilience."

BT Group plc is a British multinational telecommunications company headquartered in London.

BT Group has a long‑standing history of offering share plans to its workforce and supporting colleagues through these key moments has always been a priority. As their 2020 saveshare approached maturity, BT Group wanted to ensure employees clearly understood their choices and could make well-informed decisions. To achieve this, BT Group partnered with WEALTH at work to deliver an engaging financial education programme to employees.

Understanding the 2020 saveshare maturity landscape

This maturity was a significant milestone for BT Group. The saveshare scheme had been paused after the 2020 grant, making it the final maturity before the plan’s reintroduction. A large number of colleagues in the UK, along with a smaller amount in Ireland, were approaching their maturity date. With an option price of 82p and an expected maturity price of around £2, many employees stood to more than double their money.

BT Group also recognised that maturity could feel overwhelming for colleagues, particularly when they needed to understand tax implications, their available choices, and longer‑term considerations beyond short‑term gain.

This was a pivotal financial moment for participants and highlighted the need for clear, practical guidance and support.

Delivering a comprehensive saveshare maturity programme

WEALTH at work delivered a series of 10 financial education sessions to guide colleagues through their choices, followed by the opportunity to access a helpline for a one-to-one call. This proactive approach proved highly effective, with nearly 500 employees attending the sessions, representing a 77% attendance rate among saveshare participants who registered for a session.

The sessions helped colleagues understand key areas including their tax position, Capital Gains Tax, Income Tax and the implications of holding or selling shares. A dedicated microsite was also created to provide further information and resources.

By simplifying these complex topics, WEALTH at work enabled colleagues to understand the impact of their decisions. When maturity arrived, BT Group saw employees making informed choices to mitigate tax, such as using ISAs which reflected a stronger understanding of the choices available to them.

Employee feedback

The financial education sessions received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Employees described the sessions as:

“You made the content much easier to understand. Extremely helpful, very clear on my options now, learned a lot!”

“Well worth the time, realised I didn't know anywhere near as much as I thought I did.”

“Really useful, was unaware of CGT implications on the sharesave prior to attending!”
